The Leadership Quest And The 4 Essential Questions Of Leadership

Leaders are people who are tasked with the job of leading a team towards a certain goal. While that sounds simple enough, it actually entails a lot more complex elements within.

For example, a leader has to watch out for the cohesiveness of the team, making sure the internal politics do not divert the team from its ultimate goal.

He has to gel and manage the character differences between the individuals, ensuring the clash or conflict does not escalate.

He also has to balance varied opinion and the need to make a decision. Every time a decision is made, someone is bound to be less happy as the suggestion is not accepted while the other gleams with satisfaction.

He will also have to motivate and inspire the team enough to take action or else no task can be brought to fruition. irresponsible behaviour of members will have to be handled appropriately and diplomatically.

Hence, a leader is also a coach, a counsellor, a decision maker, a facilitator, a guide, a mentor, a disciplinarian, a problem solver, a friend, a motivator, an executioner and sometimes a bad guy.

Yes, yes, a leader does wear many hats. Some could be so high that the hats topple all over without warning.

Its never easy, that’s why many don’t become leader. Only those who dare to embark on the quest do.

The Leadership Quest is eternal, once started, there is no turning back. It comprises of a journey filled with uncertainty, a path full of risk, and future faced with unknown.

Yet the quest is ever so essential that no leader can do without it. Those who fail to fulfill the quest will soon find themselves walking alone and very soon replaced. In business, this is even more so as an ineffective key manager can be removed in an instant.

A leader will thus have a very short time to answer and respond to these 4 Essential Questions:

1) How are my members like? How do they behave?

2) How do I make them comprehend my plan and instructions?

3) How will I make sure they take the intended action, and move towards our goal?

4) How do I keep them wanting more and stay committed and dedicated to our goal?

If you have not discovered it by now, the Leadership Quest is the Quest for Influence. Without influence, a leader will never be able to satisfy any of the questions well. Without influence, no team can go through thick and thin together. And without influence, nothing much gets done.

A leader will find that the above 4 Essential Questions must be well answered and acted upon. He will need the power to influence to manifest the answers into reality.

Influence of a leader must be in the form of legitimate capability and in the form of communication competency. It must not be abused for influence can be easily twisted for selfish means. A quest that can result in disaster…

And the quest hence continues, for the seasoned leader. The quest meanwhile awaits the novice leader. The quest of a leader must never be underestimated or ignored.

Indeed the quest of leadership influence is an eternal journey, just when it seems to end, another bend occurs. But those who walk the path well will find themselves enormously rewarded with fame, wealth and satisfaction.

A quest will always have its rewards. So does the Leadership Quest.
