Proven Tips To Boost Your Public Speaking And Presentation Skills (Part 26)

A couple of new members joined our Club tonight. They were recruited from our Speechcraft sessions that were held in the previous month. Hence tonight’s meeting had a renewed sense of vibrancy and elation.

Over at the Telok Blangah Toastmasters Club, we pride ourselves for being a small and cozy Club, where everyone strives to perform their best in speeches, no matter what level we first started. And we have testimonials after testimonials of changed lives and improved communication because they first decided to become a Toastmaster. (Should you be searching for more information regarding our Club, here’s our website: http://www.tbtoastmasters.org)

I had the privilege to serve as the Language Evaluator for tonight’s meeting as well as personally took notes on the various Basic Projects that were being presented. I could feel the passion of the presenters as they delivered their meticulously crafted speeches.

From topics about shopping, inflation to providing mutual support, these are timely reminders of our roles and duties as Toastmasters and friends to each other. That’s when we commit to become better communicators; we care for the community as well.

Some of the additional comments I’ve shared about improving tonight’s speeches included:

1. When it’s a ‘Your Body Speaks’ project, avoid merely rolling your wrists just for the sake of adding body language variety. Learn to extend the span of your arms so as to display dimensions and depth of your subjects.

2. Remove anything that hampers your audience’s view of you, for example, the lectern that stands in the way of you fully utilizing your body language.

3. Understand that there are differences between making a speech and presenting an academic lecture. The former seeks to get the message across while the latter usually intends to provide factual analytical information. Avoid turning a speech into a lesson talk.

4. Always keep the main theme of your speech in mind as you speak so that we can sense what you intend to say.

When we can put in our best effort, we will surely notice improvement. When it comes to Toastmasters, we can allow ourselves to fully immerse into the fine art of speech making.
